Le U.S. Open

It’s that time of the year again where the players travel to Flushing Meadows to grind out at the last major of the year.  This US Open will be a special one to say the least.  The women’s number one player Serena Williams is looking to complete her calendar Grand Slam which hasn’t been done since Steffi Graf in 1988.  She has been playing wonderful tennis this year and is the favorite to win.  She could meet her sister Venus in the quarterfinals which is always a fun match to watch. Her biggest threat is world No.2 Simona Halep, who Serena beat at the Western and Southern Open finals 6-3 7-6.

Novak Djokovic the no.1 seed is the favorite on the men’s side.  World no.2 Roger Federer is a strong contender and has been playing very strong and aggressive, and could always cause trouble for Novak.  Andy Murray has an interesting first round match against tennis “Bad Boy” Nick Kyrgios who was recently fined for comments he said about world No.5 Stan Wawrinka. Rafael Nadal has been struggling this year losing to players he normally beats, most recent his R16 loss to fellow countryman Feliciano Lopez at the Cincinnati Masters.  Rafa is on Novak’s side of the draw and they could meet up in the quarterfinals.

The 2014 US Open had everyone surprised as No.10 seed Kei Nishikori met No.14 seed Marin Cilic in the final.  Neither of them had ever reached a Grand Slam final.  Usually we are used to seeing a final with Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray.

The US Open  will take place August 31- September 13th. Tv coverage can be found on EPSN, ESPN2, ESPN3  and the Tennis Channel.
